The All-Progressives Congress has begun talks with three governors of the Peoples Democratic Party in the hopes of converting them.
On Monday, our correspondent learned in Abuja that the Governor Mai Mala Buni-led Caretaker/Extraordinary National Convention Planning Committee has initiated negotiations with three PDP governors: Okezie Ikpeazu, Ifeanyi Ugwanyi of Enugu State, and Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State.
“The Zamfara State, Bello Mattawalle, is already in the kitty,” claimed a top-ranking member of the party who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation. At least 18 of our governors are expected to attend his homecoming in Gusau tomorrow (Tuesday).
“We expect Governor Ikpeazu to follow after him. The discussions have progressed to the next level. You know, he’ll be finishing his second term in 2023, and he’d like to stay politically relevant. Both parties are currently working out the specifics of the terms.
“The other governors have dispatched emissaries, and negotiations are underway. Remember that the membership registration/revalidation period has been extended. This was done to make room for some of these folks.
“We expect them and their supporters to use our ward, local government, and state congresses to get a foothold in the party; the APC is a party for all Nigerians,” she said.
In reaction, PDP spokesman Kola Ologbondiyan refuted such talk in an interview with one of our journalists.
“Unfortunately, we have a government party that has entirely lost focus,” he remarked. The APC is a political party that rose to power by propaganda and still believes it can do so in the future.
“They want all of our governors in their midst because they aren’t performing, but Nigerians know the difference and won’t be duped any longer.”
Efforts to get a response from the Abia State Government were unsuccessful. When approached, John Okiyi Kalu, the Abia State Commissioner for Information, denied to respond. The governor’s Chief Press Secretary could not be reached for comment.
“The PDP hopes that Bello Matawalle, as well as members of the Zamfara State National and State Assembly, will exercise care.
The party’s State Executive was also disbanded, according to the announcement. The decision is made in accordance with Section 29 (2)(b) of the PDP Constitution of 2017. (As amended).
