Mr Sikiru Solagberu, the counsel for one of the eight accused people facing trial in the murder of Blessing Olajide, a University of Ilorin student, was given a bench warrant by Justice Ibrahim Yusuf of the Kwara State High Court on Wednesday.
On June 2, 2021, Olajide was raped and murdered in Ilorin’s Tanke neighborhood.
Abdulazeez Ismail, Ajala Oluwatimileyin (aka Jacklord), Oyeyemi Omogbolahan, Abdulkarim Shuaib (as Easy), Kareem Rasheed (Rashworld), Abdullateef Abdulrahman, Daud Adebayo (aka Bashman), and Akande Taiye Oladoja are the eight defendants charged on 11 counts.
However, the case took a dramatic turn when the presiding judge ordered Adebayo’s lawyer, Solagberu, to be arrested for making disparaging remarks about the Tuesday hearings on television and social media.
The lawyer is also accused of withdrawing from the case without alerting his client.
Solagberu was accused of criticizing the court’s decision after filing a motion for his client’s bail on Tuesday, which was denied by the court.
“It is not innovative because the constitution allows for suspects to be given bond, even if they are charged with a capital offense.
“However, because of the sensitivities surrounding the case, most people would not want to hear you file a bail application,” he explained.
“The behaviour of the lawyer is a symptom of indiscipline,” Justice Yusuf stated, wincing at the remark. He did not notify his client of his withdrawal and did not appear in court; he simply submitted a letter this morning through one Yemisi Ademola.
“On Monday, July 12, 2021, security men should arrest the attorney and bring him before the court.”
The case was delayed until July 12, 2021, by Justice Yusuf.
